Chapter 31; v,18

And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evils which they shall have done, in that they are turned to other gods.

When God hides His face from His people, He does so primarily because they do not turn to God immediately, with prayers and repentance, when they are in trouble. Rather, they attribute their trouble to natural, political or economic causes, and, consequently, they look to natural or man-made remedies for their deliverance. They “turn to other Gods ” – means of deliverance other than those which would bring them Divine assistance. “Had they turned to Me to begin with,” says the Lord, “I would never have hidden My face from them.” (Sforno)
