Chapter 8; v.4

ויַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה כַּֽאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָֹה אֹתוֹ וַתִּקָּהֵל הָֽעֵדָה אֶל־פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵֽד

And Moses did as the Lord commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together to the door of the Tent of Meeting.

“This is one of the instances where a small place held a multitude.” (Rashi) Likewise, Ibn Gabirol wrote in מבחר הפנינים: “Even the eye of a needle is not too narrow for two people who love each other, yet the breadth of the whole world is too narrow for enemies.”

Love ruled amongst the Children of Israel, and, therefore, the courtyard of the Tent of Meeting, which was 50 cubits by 50 cubits, was large enough to hold all of the congregation. Therefore, it says in the following verse: “And Moses said to the congregation: this is the thing that God commanded to do”.

The verse, though, does not explain what God had commanded. The intention of this verse is that this is the thing – the love and respect that people should have for each other enables them to fit into a small space, and that is what God commanded. This love and respect should not be a one-time phenomenon, but rather it should be practiced constantly. If it is, the people will never complain that the space is too narrow for them to fit (Al HaTorah-R. Mordekhai HaCohen).

“וזה אחד מן המקומות שהחזיק מועט את המרובה” (רש”י), וכן מאמר החכם ב”מבחר הפנינים”: “נקב מחט אינו צר לשני אוהבים מלא העולם אינו רחב לשני שונאים”. אהבה שררה בקרב בני ישראל, ולכן הספיק חצר אהל מועד שהיה נ’ על נ’ אמה להחזיק את כל העדה, לכן נאמר בפסוק שלאחריו: “ויאמר משה אל העדה זה הדבר אשר צוה ה’ לעשות” ולא נתפרש מהו זה הדבר אשר צוה ה’, ברם הכוונה היא זה הדבר [האהבה השוררת עתה ביניכם], אשר צוה ה’ לעשות, היינו שלא תהיה תופעה חד פעמית אלא עשייתה תתמיד לעולם, ואז לא תתלוננו כי צר לכם המקום.
