Chapter 16; v1

וַיִּקַּח קֹרַח בֶּן־יִצְהָר בֶּן־קְהָת בֶּן־לֵוִי וְדָתָן וַֽאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וְאוֹן בֶּן־פֶּלֶת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵֽן

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men

Rav said: Onn the son of Pelet was saved by his wife. She said to him: What has this dispute to do with you? If Aaron will be High Priest, you are but a disciple, and if Korah will be High Priest, you are but a disciple! “I know”, she said to him, “that the whole assembly is holy, for it is written about them: “All the congregation are holy”. What did she do? She gave him wine to drink, got him drunk, and put him to bed. Then she sat down at the entrance, along with her daughter, and disheveled her hair, so that anyone who came for her husband, upon seeing her, turned back. Meanwhile, the others were swallowed up. Thus the text, “Every wise woman builds her house” (Prov. 14:1) applies to the wife of Onn; but “the foolish plucks it down with her own hands” (ibid) applies to the wife of Korah. (Bamidbar Rabbah 8:15).

Anyone who is about to become involved in a controversy of whatever nature would do well to remember the advice of Onn’s wife. What do you gain from this? No matter which side wins, you will still play a secondary role. You will still only be “a tail to lions”, or, even worse, just a “tail to foxes”. (Merotz HaTzvi)

אמר רב: און בן פלת, אשתו הצילתו, ואמרה ליה: מה לך בהדי פלוגתיה? אי אהרן כהנא רבא, את תלמידא; אי קרח כהנא רבה, את תלמידא! אמרה ליה: ידענא כוליה כנישתא קדישא, דכתיב ביה: כי כל העדה כולם קדושים. מה עבדת? אשקיתיה חמרא, וארוויתיה ואנגיתיה בערסא, והוה יתבא אבבא, היא וברתה, וסתרא למזייה. כל מאן דאתא בשביל און בעלה, כיון דחזייה, הדור. אדהכי והכי, אבלעינהו. היינו דכתיב (משלי יד): חכמת נשים בנתה ביתה – זו אשתו של און, ואולת בידיה תהרסנה – זו אשתו של קרח (במדבר רבה ח:טו). מי שעומד להשתתף באיזה מחלוקת, תהיה מה שתהיה, עליו לזכור חכמתה של אשת און – מה לך במחלוקת זו? אם צד זה ינצח או זה שכנגדו ינצח, אתה תשאר רק זנב לאריות או לארי זה או לארי זה – ואפשר, ויותר גרוע מזה, תהיה רק זנב לשועלים.
