Parashat Ki Tavo

Chapter 28;v.8

The Lord shall command the blessing upon you in your storehouses, and in all that you set your hand to; and he shall bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

The blessing takes effect only אתך – with your participation, when you have done everything you can do – as it is written (Deuteronomy 15): “And Hashem your God will bless you in everything that you do.” And in the Sifre it says: “I might think even if you stand by idly [you would be blessed], so the verse says: ‘that you do’. It is not for you to sit with folded hands and hope for God’s blessing without your active participation. Likewise, it says in Tanhuma (Ki Tetze 13) “Man must toil and labor with his two hands, and the Holy One, blessed be He, sends His blessing.”(Menachem Tzion)
